Lighting Depth

Each of the following four spaces will have the lighting systems redesigned:

│ Lobby
│ Weight Training/Cardio Space
│ Running Track
│ Exterior

A schematic design will be completed for each space that satisfies all design criteria identified in Technical Report 1. The design criteria previously identified will be combined with the applicable elements of LEED compliance and all Standard 90.1 requirements. Daylighting and controls will be high priority study elements that will involve extensive research and possible simulation.

Electrical Depth

The electrical depth portion will include alterations which reflect the new lighting designs. It is certain that re-circuiting will have to be done. Also, a new control diagram will have to be created using the current relay panels in order to reflect the lighting changes. Panelboards will have to be modified depending on the re-circuiting and new locations of lighting fixtures.
The spin room has specifications for cycles that will harvest the power generated by members of the cycling class if desired by the campus. Research will be done to determine the amount of energy that can be harvested, as well the equipment needed to implement such a system effectively. Some topics that will be researched include batteries, DC to AC inverters, and cycle manufacturers.

Facade Breadth

This portion of my thesis project will involve research and reporting on various aspects of proposing a change from the current façade to a pressurized rain skin façade. The current façade utilizes a regular rain skin, and I would like to determine the advantages and disadvantages of implementing the new type of facade. Several items I intend to determine and report about this façade include the following:

  • Construction Differences

  • Constructability

  • Implementation Process

  • Cost Differences

  • Technological Considerations

  • Maintenance

  • Aesthetic Differences

  • Other Challenges

  • Any Other Disadvantages/Advantages

  • Reasons for Not Being Utilized in America

  • Future American Considerations (if applicable)

Mechanical Breadth

This portion of my thesis project will take the previous breadth one step further. Since a mechanical breadth involving the new façade will require significant amounts of time, I would like to take that opportunity to execute an in depth study of the mechanical effects of this new façade on my building in comparison to the old façade system. This breadth will include calculations of heating and cooling load variations, as well as a cost analysis to determine whether the load differences will justify the new façade.
